Description of intervention(s) / exposure
Community-dwelling older adults aged 55 years and older receiving aged care services will be invited to undertake an assessment interview on their quality of life, memory performance and social network structures at two time points (baseline and a six month follow-up). Qualified researchers (e.g., with postgraduate degrees in psychology or a similar allied health health background) will conduct these assessments. The interview will take approximately 45 minutes. Their service data (including information on what type of service they received, how long they received it for) will also be collected during this six month period.

Statistical methods / analysis
A prospective analysis of linked, non-identified records of community aged care clients who are administered the assessments will be performed to quantitatively examine the associations between service provision, social networks and client outcomes (e.g., quality of life and memory function). Descriptive analyses will be used to quantify: i) the types, breadth and level of social networks, memory function and quality of life of clients at baseline; ii) changes in clients’ networks, memory and quality of life at six month follow-up; and iii) community service utilisation captured by the aged care provider’s client management system following assessment. Correlation and regression analyses will be used to determine associations between: i) social networks and quality of life; ii) social networks and community service utilisation; and iii) social networks and memory performance. Potential confounders, such as age and mobility, will be controlled for in these analyses.

Summary
Brief summary
We are seeking to identify whether large supportive social networks in older adults are linked with better memory function and quality of life, and help to protect against memory decline. We would also like to see whether current aged care services offered in the community can improve social networks and halt memory decline. For further information please refer to our study video for clients (https://youtu.be/ChsF7ypNiMo) and aged care providers (https://youtu.be/_EIyiPOpjmw).
