Description of intervention(s) / exposure
An observational study design where athletes would record their dietary intake over a nominated period (8 day period, during pre-season training) on days that include the provision of meals from an in-house foodservice facility and days where athletes are fully self-reliant. Outcome measures include dietary (macronutrient) intake and nutrient timing using validated tools where available. The study will be undertaken in a convenience sample of high-performance Australian Rules Football Players in an affiliated sporting club.
Participants are only provided meals that are already being provided as part of their contract; no changes are being made.

Study participants will be elite male Australian Rules Football players from the Gold Coast Suns Football Club. Players aged between 18-30 years, with 0-3 years of experience in the AFL will be approached to participate in this study.

Statistical methods / analysis
Participant characteristics and outcome variables will be described using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation for normal continuous variables, median and interquartile range (IQR) for non- parametric continuous variables and number and percentage for categorical variables. Normality testing will be performed on all continuous numerical data using tests Shapiro Wilk, histogram and normal Q-Q plot tests.
The participants will be coded using initials, gender and participant numbers during collection. They will then be given a participant number when the data is being analysed.
Dietary intake data will be analysed using Foodworks ™ to calculate daily energy, carbohydrate, fat, protein, fibre, iron and calcium intakes and be compared between catered and non-catered days.
Paired t-tests, ANOVA and Cohen’s d equations will be used to statistically analyse the numerical data (macronutrient and energy intake and diet quality). In the case of non-parametric data, the Mann Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests may be applied.
All statistical analysis will be conducted in IBM SPSS statistics.

Brief summary
This study will compare data from days that athletes are provided meals from a dietitian led food-service system and days when the food choices are led by the athletes. The methods of data collection will be used to extrapolate and compare player’s dietary (energy and macronutrient) intake, nutrient timing and dietary quality on food service vs athlete led days. Hypothesis: Dietary intake and meal timing will be superior (in relation to guidelines) on days that athletes consume meals provided by the clubs integrated food service model run by a sports dietitian.
